Principles for Life Series

Today I will be starting to share with you a series called Principles for Life. Here I will share principles that have been instrumental in my life as I seek to live for Jesus.  They are not meant to take place of Biblical teaching, rather, they are based on Biblical teaching and their purpose is to encourage us to live for God and to have some basic principles to help us stay on course.

Today’s Principle is:

Delay your spoken responses.  Think before you speak.

It is very easy to say everything we want to say.  This does not mean that we should.  Most conversations happen with little thinking, this makes us say things we shouldn’t, things we don’t want to, and things that are not useful to build up others.  I have learned, and still continue to learn, that delaying my spoken responses help me tremendously in having wholesome conversations.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”  Ephesians 4:29

Delaying our spoken responses will help us encourage rather than discourage, build, instead of destroy, enlighten rather than darken, and most importantly, glorify God instead of ourselves.

Experiencing Joy..

Joy does not come easy.  Happiness can be found anywhere.  Joy is a deep sense of security knowing that in spite circumstances God will ultimately bring light in the midst of dark places.  To experience true joy is to experience God’s sovereignty.  The more we trust, the easier it gets to stand strong and have a firm faith. This is when experiencing joy does not come easy: trusting God.

John 7:38

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

Nehemiah 1:8

“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Take God at his word and trust in him. Trust that life will flow out of you even if you don’t seem to have life within you. Trust that your strength comes from God.  This force comes from the joy of the Lord, who has promised never to leave you nor forsake you.

Quick Guide on how to pray using the ACTS Method…

A: Adoration:

Spend time praising the Lord by praying the Psalms back to Him (Psalm 28:7 & 100:4). Say things that come to your mind of who God is.

C: Confession:

Ask God to search your heart (Psalm 139:23,24). Confess any sins the Holy Spirit reveals to you (Psalm. 66:18, I John 1:9).

T: Thanksgiving:

Thank God for all that He’s done and is doing in your life and the lives of others. Write a list of what you’re thankful for.

S: Supplication:

Pray for specific things each day such as personal concerns, family, upcoming events, friends, missionaries, etc. Write down your requests so you’ll have a record of God’s guidance and faithfulness.

BSM Culture

One aspect of our BSM culture is total surrender to God, which is an act of worship.  The idea is that being a college student is not just an isolated 4 year event in life, it if s carefully designed experience by a sovereign God. We may choose to ignore this fact, but doing so will result in going through college in a less than ideal way.

If we follow this route, we will be rejecting God’s ideal plan for our lives.  His ideal plan entails transformation from the inside out, a change in perspective that will allow you to enjoy life for what it is, a wonderful meaningful journey in which we discover that life is not about us and for us but for God and for loving people in his love.

What a joyful occasion it is when we come to realize this fact and when we surrender to him, letting him guide us and teach us, and show us the wonderful things he has planned for our lives.  When we do this there will be no regrets, only satisfacti0n in him, which ultimately is all that matters in this world.
